Exploring Life Through The Lens

Blueberry Kefir Smoothie

Couple of months back, I started making my own kefir at home. Like trying anything new, it was exciting and fresh. I was pumped to introduce kefir to its bacteria friends in my super long gut, all 100 trillion of them. I told myself I was going to eat this everyday and that nothing would stop me from consuming this super food.

Two months later, instead of having 75% water in my body, I think the whole make up of my body is 99% kefir. I felt so kefirful. Not that kefir was bad or that it hasn’t provided me with its nutritional benefits. Far from it. I was just sick and tired of eating kefir the same way.

And although I love my mix berry milk smoothie, I sometimes feel reluctant to consume milk. So even though kefir is slightly tart in flavor, I think it is an excellent milk substitute, and in this case in a fruit smoothie. Besides, this is an awesome way to add more health benefits in an already healthy beverage. Since I had some blueberries on hand, I thought I’d make some blueberry kefir smoothie. Cheers!

Did you know that

  • kefir has a higher yeast and bacteria count than yogurt?
  • kefir helps get rid of unwanted bacteria? A healthy gut = a healthy immune system = a healthy you.
  • ¾ cups of kefir fulfils your daily need of calcium?
  • kefir has “tryptophan” an amino acid which gives us a relaxing effect (in fact kefir if loosely translated means good feeling)?
  • kefir can give you the protein you need which makes you feel full without the extra fat/calories?
  • kefir is a source of vitamin A, D, B1, B12 and K which are all important for a healthy physical growth and brain development?
  • kefir is a source of magnesium and phosphorus that helps maintain a good nervous system?
  • kefir makes your skin look better and younger?

Quick Recipe       Serves 2

what you need:

1 ½ cup kefir
1 cup blueberries (or any other fruit)
2 tbs honey

directions:

  1. Put everything in a blender and blend until smooth and incorporated. If you like it thicker, add less blueberries or more kefir and vice versa.

What do you love to do with your kefir?
