A month ago, Mr. V had spring break. It was our most anticipated break since he started his intensive SMPTV program at USC last August. I was all geared up to go somewhere. Anywhere. As long as it’s not L.A.
Spring break week was also the scheduled time to fix the car. You see last November at exactly 7:45 am, our apartment manager texted us to move our car from the parking garage because workers were going to fix the rain gutter of our apartment building. Of course, we were still in bed. Sleeping. Like every other day at 7:45 am. So we missed the text.
Five minutes later, I heard a loud crash just outside our bedroom window. On the roof, heavy footsteps could also be heard. Not long after, there was a knock on the door. I sleepily opened the door and there stood the apartment manager asking us to move our car. It was 8:00 am.
With eyes still half closed, Mr.V got dressed and went to the parking garage. In no time, he was back and was making a phone call. I found out that the loud crash just 15 minutes ago… was the rain gutter… that crashed… onto our car.
Long story short, after plenty of denying and explaining and procrastinating, an agreement was made to fix the car in March. Spring break. The week before spring break, we couldn’t reach the owner of the rain gutter company. By the time he called us back, it was Day 2 (of Day 7) of spring break. We won’t be able to finish fixing the car before school starts.
And when life decides to throw lemons at us, it decides to throw lemons twice. Mr. V’s work schedule suddenly changed and he was busy again. During spring break. Oh, come on!
On the last day of spring break, I suppose Mr. V felt bad for me. He enthusiastically planned a short visit somewhere the next day. But, he.failed.to.wake.up. I let him sleep in because he was sleep deprived that week. Story of my life, really.
Mr. V still insisted at 4:00 pm on the last day of spring break that we needed to get out. We ended up at the Hollywood Bowl Scenic Overlook. It was no Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam that I had envisioned for spring break. It was a short 10 minutes drive away. But boy was the view gorgeous. Boy was the air fresh and crisp. Boy was it nice to just get out.
I learned something valuable throughout these events.
Have ZERO expectations. Yup.
Didn’t expect compensation for the car damages but there is.
Didn’t expect Mr. V to make time, but he did.
Didn’t expect the overlook to be beautiful but it was.
And all this started from the rain gutter. I’m grateful.
