Watermelon was a forbidden fruit. Says the lady who grew up with mild asthma as a young girl. You know what else was forbidden? Orange.
Two of my favorite fruit and I wasn’t allowed any.
I whined. I cried. I begged.
Sometimes, my parents would give into my pathetic whines but most of the time, it was a no. As I grew older and wiser, their response went from a ‘no’ to ‘It’s up to you’. It was so reverse psychology on their part. They knew that I knew that it was tough if I’d start to cough and wheeze. They played with my conscience, my logic. I wasn’t stupid.
After 12 years old, somehow, the symptoms subsided. I’m not sure what happened but the doctor said that if I don’t have the symptoms after 11 years of age, I’ve pretty much outgrown the disease. Who outgrows diseases anyway? I never needed the inhaler all this while too. I didn’t bother with the explanation as long as I get to freely eat the forbidden fruit. Everything is still a mystery.
Can anyone possibly get tired of watermelon? Probably not. But I am tired of chewing watermelon. Every mouthful is so juicy and crisp. So much control needed not to make a mess. My mouth deserves a vacation. I resorted to blending it instead. While I was at it, I thought why not add some lime, sugar and salt.
Watermelon Limeade.
One sip and I didn’t even know what hit me. Not for the faint heart. So good… so, so good.
